Undercoat & Primer - Our Finishes Explained

We now offer 3 different finish options - unprimed, primed and undercoated. We're not going to cover unprimed in detail but we're going to explain what you can expect based on you choosing our primed or undercoated options.

The finish option is available on most of the products that we manufacture in house (such as skirting board and architrave).

Primed Finish

In short, if you choose our primed option the boards will be sanded down and then a single layer of primer will be applied (also known as a base coat).

Now we'll break it down in steps.

Sanding

Once the profile has been machined onto the board, it is loaded onto our spray line.

The first process is to sand down the board. We have a machine that handles this for us.

It consists of several different brush heads (set up at different angles and heights based on the profile) to ensure the material is smooth and free of dust before the finish is applied.

Priming

Immediately after the board is sanded, it is passed through our spray machine.

Our spray machine consists of several guns (set up at different angles and heights based on the profile) to ensure optimal coverage of the boards.

Once the boards have been through the spray line, they are loaded onto trolleys and dried in our industrial drier.

What To Expect From The Primed Finish

If you choose this option, you can expect to receive a board with a single coat of primer (a base coat).

We recommend that an undercoat is applied to the board before you apply your final paint finish.

Undercoated Finish

In short, if you choose our undercoated option the boards will be primed (as above) then sanded down and a layer of undercoat will be applied.

We'll break this down again.

First, it will follow the steps above (as if it were primed):

Sanded down

Primed

Sanding (2nd Time)

Once the priming has been completed and the boards are fully dry, they are loaded back onto the spray line.

First, they get sanded down so that the priming coat is smooth and free of dust.

Undercoating

Immediately after the primed board is sanded, it is passed through our spray machine again to receive a layer of undercoat.

Our spray machine consists of several guns (set up at different angles and heights based on the profile) to ensure optimal coverage of the boards.

Once the boards have been through the spray line, they are loaded onto trolleys and dried in our industrial drier.

What To Expect From The Undercoated Finish

If you choose this option, you can expect to receive a board that has received both a layer of primer and a layer of undercoat.

This option enables you to either install straight away (matt white finish) or finish with your choice of paint before installing.
