Finding the Right Height
Positioning is key for both period properties and modern homes. Dado rails typically sit at three‑fifths of the wall height, while picture rails are positioned higher near the ceiling. Use our calculators to find the ideal position for your room.
Materials and Specifications
Material Quality
Our rails are manufactured from high-density, moisture-resistant MDF, combining softwood fibre with resin. This provides excellent durability and moisture resistance, making them suitable for most areas in British homes, including kitchens and bathrooms when kept away from direct water contact.
Available Sizes
Choose from standard sizes: 18mm or 25mm thickness, 2440mm, 3050mm or 4200mm lengths, and custom specifications available. Longer lengths reduce the number of joints needed, which is particularly useful in larger rooms.
Finish Options
Available in: unprimed for your own preparation, primed for painting, undercoated for faster finishing, and matte grey. Each finish option helps reduce installation time and gives you control over the final look.
Installation Guide
Wall Fixing
For typical UK brick and block walls, use wall plugs, screws, nails, or adhesive with fixings positioned at 300mm intervals.

For precise corners, cut 45‑degree mitres for standard corners, make external corner cuts away from the visible face, cut internal corners towards the visible face, use a proper mitre box, and trial fit before final fixing.

Stair installations need precise angle calculations for both raking and level sections. Our calculator helps work out the exact cuts needed.

Bespoke Requirements
Our in‑house design team can create custom specifications for special thickness requirements, unique profile designs, and specific width needs. Contact info@skirtingworld.co.uk to discuss your requirements.
Curved Walls
Our rails are designed for straight installations. And whilst it is possible, do not recommend bending our MDF Dado Rails, however some contractors may have particular experience with kerf cuts.
Period Properties
When working with older properties, check the wall condition thoroughly, use appropriate fixings for the wall type, pack out uneven sections to maintain a level surface, and use flexible caulk for gap filling.
Design Approach
Colour Selection
A carefully chosen colour scheme can transform your space. Consider matching the rail to the wall colour for a seamless look or opting for a contrasting finish to create a striking feature. Take into account your room’s existing décor, lighting, and architectural details, and experiment with finishes such as matte, gloss, or satin to complement the overall ambience.
Room Layout
The placement of rails can significantly influence the flow and function of your space. In open-plan areas, a rail can serve as a subtle divider that delineates different zones without interrupting sightlines. Consider how the rail aligns with other architectural features and furniture placements to enhance balance and visual interest, adding both structure and style to your room.
Maintenance Guide
Regular Care
To maintain appearance, dust regularly, address any damage promptly, keep surfaces dry in wet areas, and check fixings periodically.
Repairs
When needed, fill gaps with flexible caulk, touch up paint carefully, replace damaged sections, and secure any loose fixings.
